This October 2nd marked our two year island anniversary on Ambergris Caye….TWO YEARS!
One might think that living on the same rock for two years could result in boredom, alcoholism or both. Well, we are happy to report that we have successfully crossed the finish line without becoming either.
It is definitely an adjustment…..we are living here now, island residents. We are not on vacation so we don’t want to spend all day, every day in a bar (even if the bar is under a palapa, on the beach, overlooking crystal blue water)…..that is not the reason we worked so hard to move down here in the first place. Our goal was to be free from the “real world stresses” , allowing us to really live life on our terms.
Year two was another year filled with firsts…..a dozen of them to be exact.
1: Attending the Halloween Party the Holiday Hotel, AND winning a major award! (2 round trip plane tickets to Cancun on Tropic Air!)
The party was so much fun and we are already working on our costumes for this year’s party! Click here to read all about it.
2: We did our very first photo shoot!
We were asked by Maya Island Air if we would be willing to spend the day shooting pictures for an upcoming print ad. Who can say no to that, right? Click here to read all about our fun day in the city!
3: We went to our first SuperBowl!
Going to a Super Bowl has always been on our bucket list….so when the Carolina Panthers made it to Super Bowl 50, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. (plus, it was in San Francisco which also means visiting dear friends and drinking lots of California red wine!) Here’s our Super Bowl story!
4: We not only participated in and completed the La Ruta Maya River Challenge, but we came in 3rd place!!!! (see disclaimer below)
That’s right, we paddled La Ruta Maya, the 4 day, 180-mile river race, in a rental canoe. And we won third place! (in the Master’s Division, where there were only 3 contestants)…but hey, we did it. We had a great time and we won a great prize! Click here to read all about our race!
Check out our bling!
Would we do it again? Absolutely! Are we doing it again? Definitely! Watch out Master’s place winners 1st and 2nd…the Reef Runners will be back in 2017!!! (and hopefully with a much better canoe!)
5: Lots of fishing firsts: first grouper caught, first shark caught, and first dorados caught!
Ronnie is turning into such a great fisherman that we had to buy a freezer to keep all of our fish and bait in! Click here to read our shark tale!
We’re gonna need a bigger freezer!
6: First pool party interrupted by a crocodile. We have been to lots of pool parties but never had a party interrupted by a crocodile!
It was a pool party turned into crocodile wrangling by Chris….here’s the Crocodile wrangling tale!
7: First trip to Belize City for doctor’s appointments……just for physicals. We figured after two years here, it was time.
First time we got to fly to a doctor’s appointment with these views:
8: Another item checked off the bucket list: Swimming with whale sharks! And yes, it was as amazing and magical as you could ever imagine. We also got to use our free plane tickets that we won at the Halloween party!
9: Our very first hurricane! That’s right, we knew it was going to happen sometime and 2016 was the year Hurricane Earl decided to be our first….thank goodness he was only a category one, but the destruction from the storm surge was shocking.
Half of our dock at Grand Caribe was just gone…other parts washed up on our beach. Here’s our hurricane tale!
We found this piece of debris during the cleanup, reminding us that no matter what storm tries to knock you down, life is good!
10: Our first foster dog. Chunk!!!! When the island knew Hurricane Earl was going to hit us directly, the SAGA Humane Society put out a call: They needed hurricane foster families for all of their shelter dogs. We were more than happy to help….and when we asked Dooley Bear if it was ok, he was excited to have a friend to hang out with during the storm.
Chunk was such a great dog. We fostered him for 2 nights and felt bad returning him to SAGA. Later we found out great news: Chunk is adopted and now living in Seattle, Washington!!!! Yay Chunk! Dooley Bear had a great slumber party with Chunk: Click here to read Dooley Bear’s Tail.
11: We had our first “major” golf cart repair. Driving down the road in town we hit a bump and “wham”…..the leaf spring had rusted and broke in half….leaving our golf cart immobile. Thanks to our amazing island friends we were back up and running in no time. Here’s the tale of our repair!
12: And the last first of the year: We wrote, illustrated and published the first 3 books in our children’s picture book series Dooley Bear Adventures! Lisa is writing the books and Ronnie is doing the illustrations (and the illustrations are hysterical!!!).
This fun series features Dooley Bear as he travels around the world in search of fun, friends and food! Read all about it here!
Or better yet, you can go directly to the Dooley Bear Adventures website and read about the vision in detail and buy the books too!
Well, there it is!
One year, 12 months and 12 firsts!
And Mr. Dooley Bear? He just keeps on getting cooler with age!
