Imagine the worst bikes you could ever buy….
Day 1 (did you expect buying bikes to take more than one day? We didn’t either)
After years of traveling to Belize and renting bikes the day finally arrived – we were ready to buy our very own beach bikes in Belize! We woke up that hot Sunday morning with much anticipation and excitement. Our first purchase for our garage! No more renting of bikes! No more walking to town – we are going to buy beach bikes today. We even came prepared this trip with two very cool bike bells and stickers to personalize our bikes.
Filled with joy we began the 2 mile walk to town. San Pedro Hardware was our destination that day as that is where we were told to purchase our new bikes. (lesson number one – always get recommendations from more than one person on where to make a major purchase like this). We arrive at San Pedro Hardware –Lisa had thoughts of a “girly” bike – maybe purple or mint green? Something bright and fun. But she also accepted that we are on an island and the colors that they have will be the colors she would get to choose from.
They had 2 color choices of beach bikes – orange and blue. We look at each other – so we guess our bikes will be blue and orange? Perfect! We told the guy at the store we will take one blue and one orange bike. (lesson number 2 – we didn’t ask if these were good quality bikes or do any research whatsoever on the brand of the bikes which looked like they wanted to name them Hurricanes but couldn’t spell it correctly). He said to come back in an hour and he would get two new ones from the warehouse for us. Great! We left to go find a restaurant for lunch to wait out that hour.
Where to eat…..Hurricanes! Of course Hurricanes was the perfect choice to wait out our bike assembly time. It’s not only one of our favorite ceviche restaurants but it’s way down on the south side of town….so since we walked two miles to get into town, why not walk further? We had a great lunch (as always) at Hurricanes – grouper ceviche and 2 Belikin Beers each. After lunch we made our way back up to the store excited to pick up our purchase.
We walk into the store to find 2 bright blue bikes waiting for us. Ummm….but where is the orange bike Lisa wanted? He thought we wanted 2 blue bikes and had those assembled for us. (lesson number 3 – never assume – always double check). Deflated, the store manager said to come back in 45 minutes and he would have the orange bike ready for us. No problem – another 45 minutes to kill…..this time we went for a couple of beers at the closest bar – Wet Willys.
It was a great time waiting – NFL playing, some ice cold Belikin Beers. It’s easy to wait out 45 minutes in this town. We arrive back at the store to pick up our bikes – yes! Success! He did tell us that the seats were very poor quality and to stop back in the next day and he would put new seats on for us. Filled with elation we rode north along the palm tree lined sand road to our place.
We posed our new bikes under a palm tree for a picture – bike shopping success!!!!
Or so we thought…….to be continued….
