We live on a small island….in Belize.
We chose to move here and choose to stay here….so when things happen like the cable going out during the 5th inning of the last game of the World Series….or when the power goes out during the 8th inning of the last game of the World Series happen…..we just go with the flow.
The power went out during the 8th inning of game 7 of the World Series!!!
We don’t get upset.
We don’t get angry.
We just laugh it off as, “That’s just life in Belize!” and figure out a solution to the problem.
The night started out great. We were cooking our delicious pizza from SandBar and when the Cubbies hit a home run – look what happened to it!
Strange – but we thought, “That must be a good sign.” (A sign of what we weren’t sure…..)
We were getting into the game and eating our pizza when the cable feed started to lock up…..
And then went out…..
It went out sometime around the 5th inning.
When the cable went out, Dooley Bear got concerned –
Thankfully Belize is home to lots of pirate-minded people and we were able to find somebody “streaming” the game on another channel….pretty sure it was somebody filming the game they were watching…but hey, it worked and we were able to continue watching the game in the 6th inning.
The “real” HD cable came back up and was running great until the 8th inning when all of the power on the island went out.
After laughing at how absurd the situation was, Ronnie came up with a plan……
Our main lobby at Grand Caribe has a generator AND WIFI…….the three of us ran over to the lobby hoping to at least follow the game through friends on facebook or just get the final score.
Hanging out in the lobby….
We thought we would just be able to get on Facebook to check the final score, but since island life is all about problem solving, two of our friends (one in Belize City and the other in Shanghai) started a live stream from their Facebook so we could watch the game!
That’s right….we were able to watch the World Series in Belize through our friend who streamed it for us from Shanghai, China! (And we think she was streaming it from her husband who was in London…)
There were the 3 of us, a guest and a few employees huddled in the lobby watching all of our different devices….the guest had a radio broadcast which was “live”, the Shanghai feed was about 30 seconds after and the employees had a laptop streaming that was about a minute after that. So we’d hear the play from the radio, see it on our feed and then see it again on the laptop.
Exciting and confusing all at the same time….but definitey unique!
When it finally came down to the last out in the 10th inning and the Cubs came out as the winners, Dooley Bear got to break out his custom made Cubs hat with “dead billy goat” mask.
We love that our tale about “where we watched the Cubs win the 2016 World Series” includes cable outages, pirated tv, an island-wide power outage and a live stream from Shanghai, China. Being fans of a team that took 108 years to win a championship, these small hurdles are just part of the charm of being a Cubs fan.
Island life at it’s best!
