Just one year and three days after Hurricane Earl decimated our tiny island, we had another intruder lurking at our door. His name was Franklin and he was a tropical storm.
The morning that Franklin was to hit, the SAGA Humane Society put out the call, “We have over 20 dogs living at Fort Dog that need shelter for the storm.” We asked Dooley Bear if he wanted to have another slumber party and he was all in.
We drove down to SAGA to pick up our foster.
On the way, we saw lots of storm preparations underway.
Tour boats were pulled up on the shore –
The Sandbar already had their deck furniture tucked away and boards on their windows –
We pulled up to Fort Dog to pick up our foster potlicker.
A lot of the dogs had already been moved over to SAGA for pickup –
We drove over to SAGA to pick up our foster potlicker. We introduce to you, Ms. Dopey!
We introduce to you, Ms. Dopey!
Dopey was such a sweet girl. The poor puppy has been living at Fort Dog for over a year now.
She hopped into our golf cart and was excited to go with us – wherever we were going!
When we brought her inside, Dooley Bear was a complete gentleman. He introduced himself and showed her how to play with his favorite toy.
After playing, Dopey was tired but she just wouldn’t lie down.
So she fell asleep, standing up –
Dooley Bear took Dopey outside – she loved the view!
Even though Franklin was only to hit us as a tropical storm, Grand Caribe took every precaution to keep everyone and everything safe.
We took out all of the boats and they removed deck boards from the recently completed boat dock.
We sat outside for hours, watching the waves build and the sky darken. But lucky for us, Franklin was kind. The storm turned north and we only had some rain and light winds.
Dooley Bear and Dopey were bored, so they decided to take a nap.
The next morning we awoke to a light rain and calm seas. Thank you, Franklin, for turning north and giving us a break this time.
Do you know who else needs a break? Ms. Dopey

She is a super sweet girl who got along great with Dooley Bear! Last year, Dooley Bear’s slumber party buddy was Chunk. He was lucky enough to be adopted soon after the storm!
