For two weeks every September, Grand Caribe Belize closes its doors to guests, but they let us stay. (Which is nice because we have nowhere else to go!)
What happens at a resort when it’s closed?
Mega maintenance. That’s what happens. You wouldn’t believe the amount of work that the guys put in.
They paint our buildings –
Did you know that Grand Caribe paints all the buildings every two years? That’s why everything always looks so perfect.
Needless to say, it changes our view. But just a little bit for a couple of days.
But it’s fun because we get to play the game, “Whose boots are those?”
One of the major projects this year: refinishing the main pool. But before they refinish it, they have to drain it.
The pool bar changes from a “swim up bar” to a “walk up bar”.
Dooley Bear was so excited because we told him he could finally go swimming in the pool!
He was pretty disappointed when he realized there was no water.
But he cheered up quickly!
It doesn’t take much to make Dooley Bear happy.
So, when you drain the water from the largest pool on Ambergris Caye, what do you do with the water?
Since water is such a precious commodity here they “save” the pool water so they can reuse it when it’s time to refill the pool.
But, how do you save that much water? The first place they store the water is in all of our cisterns. We don’t know how many we have here on property, but there a lot of them.
But what if there is more water than room in the cisterns? You top up all of the other pools!
If you were to stick your foot in, it would definitely overflow.
The main pool, almost empty and ready for the repair team to make it perfect again.
And now, the demolition….
These guys are chipping away the top layer of concrete and then hauling off the debris in 5-gallon buckets.
Did we mention that it has been HOT these past few days? Hot, humid and zero breeze.
The painting continues.
Check out this very tropical construction hat.
In addition to the painting and pool resurfacing, this is going on:
What are they doing? Planting grass, blade, by blade, by blade.
Less than one week into our closure and they have started resurfacing the pool.
It’s a very fun, bright blue!
They have the sides done –
One mixer at the main entrance.
And two more on the beach side.
This is one messy job!
They painted our garages.
Our luggage cart is transformed into a high-tech sod delivery system.
Just a little over a week after the pool was drained, the resurfacing was finished and the pool was filled again.
It looks so great – nice and bright and inviting!
They are also doing renovations to the inside of the pool bar.
Resurfacing the main sign.
And planting more sod.
That pretty much covers all of the major projects for this year. We are sure lots of other repairs were done that we don’t even know about.
We cannot thank our Grand Caribe family enough for working tirelessly during our two-week closure to ensure that the resort is picture-perfect for another year of vacationers!
