Since we have been coming to Belize we have seen lots and lots of changes….hand ferries turned to bridges, Pepsi becoming extinct and much more……
These pictures were taken in San Pedro in 2001 so please forgive the poor quality!
If you think everything has changed…..read on….there are some things that will (and should) never change on the island!
Who remembers the old Tropic Air building? No fish tank or WIFI and you had to wait outside for your flight…how did we ever survive?? (they did have a payphone though…..so I guess WIFI wasn’t needed way back in 2001)
Pictures from Front Street….before the paving.
This is a view looking north from the Coral Beach Hotel. We used to stay at the Coral Beach and Ruby’s back then.
Looking south from the Coral Beach Hotel.
Did you know Master Lee owned a restaurant before he turned to medicine? He served up the best fried chicken and chicken fried rice on the island! Notice that the telephone number is only 4 digits. Think he still has the same phone number?
A view from the water to Central Park….What’s the same? The paint color on Estel’s and the giant palapa in central park….but Where is Big Daddy’s??? Guess this was before it’s time…
Anybody recognize this resort? It was Xanadu! The second building was just being built….did you know that all of the buildings were made with rebar and that concrete was sprayed inside to create the “domes”?
The Palms hasn’t changed a bit since 2001! And Ramons looks pretty similar too…..
What else has remained the same since 2001?
The main doorway to the Jaguar Temple of course…..Roar!
Ok…what are some of the other changes?
The biggest change we can remember is the old hand ferry that was used to move people from town over “the cut” to the north part of the island.
This view is from the north side…we were waiting for the ferry to cross over to pick us up.
Ronnie on the hand ferry.
Golf carts on the ferry. If we remember correctly it could only carry 2 golf carts at a time. Could you imagine the line of carts waiting to cross if there wasn’t a bridge today?
Well there you have it….since 2001 the tiny island of San Pedro, Belize has seen a lot of changes….
-hand ferries turned to bridges
-restaurant owners turned to healers
-Pepsi turned to Coca-Cola
But the best things in Belize will never change…..
The people, and their positive attitudes….. (oh yeah, and the entrance to the Jaguar Club too!)
But we really do secretly wish Pepsi would make it back……sorry Bowen and Bowen.
