Even though we live in paradise it’s always fun to take a vacation….especially with a group of crazy fun friends!
The plan was to head to Isla Mujeres, Mexico for a long weekend of music with Mark Mulligan, Sunny Jim White and Kelly McGuire at IslandFest….but how do we transport a group of people to Isla Mujeres, Mexico from San Pedro, Belize?
Sure, we could have just flown all the way to Cancun….but where’s the fun and adventure in that?
Here’s the breakdown of how we traveled up to Isla Mujeres…..
We met at the airstrip in San Pedro at 8:30 to catch the 9:00 Maya Airline flight up to Corozal, Belize…..can you believe it – everyone was not only on-time, but they were all early!
And yes, you saw that correctly – we are drinking our Belikin Beers at 8:30 in the morning…….
We were met at the Corozal airport by 2 huge vans…one to transport us and the other to transport our luggage.
Waiting to board our van….
After we were all aboard we took a run for the border….Mexican immigration went fairly quickly and before we knew it we were on our way….the road trip had officially begun!
But wait – we were missing cold beers. But not any beers – Mexican beers! and snacks…..
Luckily we found this store just over the border so we could stock up for the ride to Cancun.
Lisa found a six pack of liquid gold….Modelo!
And Eric discovered “hot nuts”……
After we were all stocked up with beers and snacks it was time to hit the road…….we had everything we needed – beer, snacks, music and rum….
Our speaker……we were having difficulties hanging it from the seatbelt…..but that didn’t stop the singing….nothing was going to stop the singing in this van!
And the Rum…..Thanks Wayo!
So, we all know what happens next…….we needed a bathroom break!
Luckily we found a nice woman running a small store that let us use her bathroom…..I’ll use the term “bathroom” loosely….but hey, it served it’s purpose!
Note to self: When traveling through Mexico always remember: BYOTP
Our fee to use the restroom? Purchase more snacks and drinks!
Next up a quick stop in Tulum for a little shopping and lunch….
and finally Cancun and the Ultramar ferry terminal! We arrived at Puerto Juarez just in time to catch the next ferry over to Isla Mujeres…..
Here’s us on the ferry with our photo bomber friend Jay!
It’s so true what they say: “It’s not about the destination. It’s about the journey”
After the long weekend (tales to be added soon!!) it was time for all of us to depart….the group scattered…some flew Tropic Air back to Belize City, others went to Canada and Colorado…..we decided to take the ADO bus from Cancun back to Tulum for a few nights.
We hopped on the 8:00 Ultramar ferry from Isla Mujeres and then 9:00 ADO bus out of Cancun….we went with the cheap tickets…$10.00US for the both of us to get to Tulum…..deal!
All was going well until the rain storm hit….
And it actually started raining in our bus…..
The guy in front of us used a plastic bag to try to keep the rain off of him…
When we arrived in Tulum we hopped in a cab for the 10 minute ride to our hotel…we stayed at the Mezzanine and it was amazing!
What’d we do in Tulum? Click here to read about our biking and swimming adventure and here to see the video of us swimming in Grand Cenote!
After two nights in Tulum (not nearly long enough) – it was time to head back home…..
We took the 10:30 ADO Directo to Chetumal.
Here’s the bus station in Tulum…..
They have “free restrooms” but also restrooms that you must pay to enter….a whopping 5 pesos!
They have toilet paper and toilet seats in the pay restrooms…..guess which one we chose to use??
Yup, we opted for the pay restrooms.
The ADO directo buses are really nice – they have a bathroom and movies! (and another bonus – it doesn’t rain on the inside of the bus!)
Matt Damon even joined us! Who knew he spoke Spanish?
The cost to ride the ADO directo from Tulum to Chetumal was $25.00US per person….it was a 3 1/2 hour ride…which went by really fast.
Especially when you are entertained by great signs along the road….like this one:
Once we arrived in Chetumal we grabbed a cab for the 10 minute ride to the ferry dock, called “Muelle Fiscal”. At the dock we checked in with San Pedro Belize Express water taxi, went through immigration and grabbed some snacks while we waited for the 3:00 water taxi to bring us home to San Pedro.
Be careful of the alligators!
The water taxi cost $25.00US per person and it took 1 1/2 hours to travel from Chetumal, Mexico to San Pedro, Belize.
They have a great snack bar…..why is it so great? Because they serve Pepsi! That’s right, PEPSI! We picked up some Pepsi and cheap cashews (as well as some other really healthy snacks)….
After the 1 1/2 hour water taxi ride we were home in San Pedro and picking up our Dooley Bear.
I guess it’s so true what they say: “It’s not about the destination. It’s about the journey”…….in this case our journey was just as much fun as the destination!
