We are not sure who to blame for filling our heads with this crazy dream. The dream that we should quit our jobs, drop out, sell everything and move to a tropical island – but we are pretty sure we have a good idea. A singer and songwriter named Mark Mulligan – he could be to blame.
We first met Mark (and heard his music) over 15 years ago in Scottsdale, Arizona. We were “pre-gaming” at a bar before a Jimmy Buffett concert and he was there playing tunes. WOW. We were totally impressed with not only his music and lyrics, but also in the amazing person he is on the inside. We sat there enjoying our rum drinks and listened to Mark’s words. We felt as if he was talking directly to us…..and it seemed like every song was even better than the one before. Yes, I guess we could have had our ”rum goggles” on, so we bought all of his CDs so we could listen to them again. His lyrics about going after your dreams, “too much wishing and not enough fishing”, “this ain’t me”…..his words spoke into our hearts and really made us think about what is important in life – for us this was each other. Spending time with each other, sharing new adventures together – just drinking every drop there is out of life.
Caution: listening to his music may cause you to drop everything and move to a tropical island somewhere south of somewhere.
So for the next several years we did the normal things – worked a lot and went on some vacations. But it always felt like the stresses of work were interfering with our lives and that work kept getting in the way of fun – we had too many dreams and too little time to live them. We would always listen to Mark’s music and see him play every chance we could. Every time we’d listen to his music we’d think “there’s got to be more to life than just working – What about living?” We really wanted to start living our lives instead of just rushing through them. So we set a plan in motion to keep working hard (even harder) and saved our money – we saved a lot. (more information to come on the details of how we did it in another tale). But the short of it is we set a plan to drop out and we stuck to it. Sure, it took 15 years to finally move to that tropical island, but we made it happen and Mark’s musical motivation kept us on track.
So, how did we come up with the title “First World Refugee” for this site? – in all honesty, we didn’t. But we didn’t steal it either (we promise). It’s the title to one of Mark Mulligan’s songs and you can click on the link above to listen to it too! The song, one of many of his songs, is all about planting the seeds of big dreams and going for it. Stop dreaming and start living. Never wait until it’s too late.
If you have dreams about making your life more than just about making money and collecting stuff, please take a moment to listen to Mark Mulligan’s music. It’s not only inspirational and fun, but it’s also a great tropical escape on those cold, dreary days. Please take the time to check out his website and download some tunes. Below are some lyrics from one of his newest songs “Back to Laid Back” –
Now it seems we’re never caught up
They say we gotta have all of this stuff
But me, I’ve had enough
Just want to box it up and send it all back
Back to laid back
This always on the run gotta go guy ain’t me
So if a brand new car never belongs to us
Or if our house is kind of small, so what
I’d rather take this big long list of things to do
Tear it up and spend my whole day here with you
Cause this stressed out, all about
Getting ahead thing ain’t who I am
or what I want
