When we lived in Charlotte we knew we would want to have a grill down here in Belize – we found the perfect grill and had it shipped down with some of our crates. Now that over 5 months have passed we have finally gotten around to setting up this grill.
What do we need? we need to buy a propane tank, get it filled and then find something to put the grill on…you know, like a table of some sort.
First step – find a propane tank. That was pretty easy – we went to our “go to” hardware store and they had propane tanks in stock. Ok – tank, check.
Now, where do we find propane? We went to the gas station and asked them where we could buy propane – their answer? “You can’t buy propane here on the island.” What? Oops….guessed we should have checked into this before we shipped down a propane grill. But wait – what? The guy said they use butane here instead and that just to bring our propane tank in and they’d fill it up with butane for us – word is butane and propane work exactly the same.
Ok, sure. Why not. We will take their word for it…..we bring our propane tank in – filler up!
What’s the worse that could happen?
We get home and connect the grill to the butane and hope for the best…..will it work? Will it explode? We had no idea…..Ronnie turned the dial, Lisa stepped far away and then we heard the “click, click, click” of the igniter and then whoosh! But a good whoosh – the grill actually ran on butane! Whew!
Now, we have a small table top grill but no table to put it on. Time to get a table.
It’s not like we can just run to the outdoor furniture store and buy one….luckily we know Oscar who own’s Mr. C’s furniture shop. Oscar is awesome – he can make anything out of mahogany that you need. All you need to bring in is the exact dimensions and a drawing of what you want.
Ronnie drew his artist rendition of our dream grill table – and we brought it down to town to Oscar and he knew exactly what we needed. He said to come back in 3 days and it’d be ready for us. Oscar told us “come by anytime and I’ll be here”. Great! We gave him a deposit of 1/2 and went on our way.
Three days later we drove down to pick up our table…..we saw it in his office through a window – it was beautiful! Just what we wanted and needed – but his office was locked and Oscar was nowhere to be found. Ronnie walked around the open-air shop and found a guy, “Where’s Oscar?” – He didn’t know where he went or how long he would be gone…..hmmmmmm…..but we are here to pay him and pick up our table.
No worries – Oscar’s family lives upstairs from the office so we were able to find his wife and she came downstairs. She unlocked the door so we could take our table, we paid her the balance, loaded up the table on our cart and we were on our way!
Just like everything else in Belize – things always just have a way of working out!
Oh yeah, and while we were leaving we saw the biggest iguana ever sitting on a wall – very cool.
And that is “buying a table”.
