“What do you do all day?” “Do you get bored?” These questions are asked of us every time we meet somebody new. And our answer is always the same, “Absolutely not. In fact, there are always too many things going on.” Here is one example of how we “didn’t get bored” this July.
For two weeks each summer Sarah Jean and Dalia Neysie Alamilla hold Ambergris Caye Camp Starfish. Camp Starfish is not just any summer camp – it’s a very special, free, summer camp for the special needs children here on the island.
In addition to all of the lesson planning, Sarah Jean also organizes volunteers from the states. The volunteer’s backgrounds range from special education to physical therapy to mental health. All volunteer their time for 2 weeks to help out our island community.
Lisa even dusted off her speech therapist hat and joined in the fun camp.
Every day was a different theme and there were age appropriate crafts and dancing for everybody to enjoy.
So, what does our book series, Dooley Bear Adventures, have to do with Camp Starfish?
One day, the theme was all about animals. Sarah Jean asked if we could come in and read one of our books and bring in Dooley Bear for the kids to meet. We all know that Dooley Bear LOVES attention and without hesitation said yes.
All of the kids were such great listeners.
After the story, we had a brief question and answer session:
“How old is Dooley Bear?” “What does he eat?” “Does he bite?”
As a reward for being such great listeners, everybody got a chance to meet Dooley Bear and give him some love.
Thank you for inviting Dooley Bear Adventures and Dooley Bear to Camp Starfish!
We are already looking forward to being a part of camp again next summer.
