Every year our dear friends Sam and Gina organize IslandFest in Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
What’s IslandFest? It is a weekend where 100 of our like-minded friends (and strangers who become friends) gather on an island to listen to original troprock music while enjoying an island vacation. Our friends/songwriters/musicians (Mark Mulligan, Sunny Jim and Kelly McGuire) perform shows on the beach at sunset……it’s truly an unforgettable experience. We have met so many incredible people who are now great friends who live all over the world….and it is such a treat to spend time with them.
This year IslandFest was scheduled on the perfect weekend for whale sharking……so we definitely were not going to miss out!
Once we arrived in Cancun we hopped on the Ultra Mar ferry over to Isla Mujeres. Curious about our travel logistics? Read more here!
Here are Kelly, Mark and Sunny Jim…..doing what they love! (Not sure what they love more – playing music or posing for pictures lol)
The first night Penny opened up her restaurant El Patio for a welcome party. This place is great….there is a giant courtyard with a stage which makes it the perfect place to listen to live music while having dinner. (And her frozen mojitos? are AMAZING!)
The next morning we had to try a new burrito restaurant that another one of our friends just opened…..Ryan Rickman opened Beachin’ Burritos and wow! Talk about delicious! These burritos were absolutely incredible!
In addition to awesome burritos, Lisa says the view isn’t bad either. Hey, it gets hot in the kitchen….I’m sure that’s the only reason why Ryan doesn’t wear a shirt. (Thanks Angela for taking the picture!)
The four of us fueled up because we were diving and snorkeling at 1:00 that day…….as we were walking to the dive shop we saw this new sign:
What? There is a place that serves craft beers on Isla Mujeres?
As we were walking to the dive shop we couldn’t stop talking about how excited we were to try these beers.
When we arrived at the dive shop it started to pour….lots of rain….and so………
We cancelled the dive and decided that drinking hand crafted beers was a way better way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Those beers were delicious!
Before the show we met up for dinner with our friends Bob and Liza.
Mark, Sunny Jim and Kelly playing on the beach.
The next morning we had a whale shark adventure scheduled.
But, the winds and sea were too rough and they closed the port. No whale sharking!
But we were able to get a picture of this abandoned hotel.
Luckily we had an excellent Plan B to fall back on:
Golf cart pub crawl around the island!
Here’s the view from Soggy Peso:
The view from Club Playa:
Hanging at the pool at Zama.
While we were eating lunch, this happened….
It’s never a dull day when you’re pub crawling around Isla Mujeres!
In addition to turkey hats and Captain Americas, there are some pretty incredible buildings and paintings around the island.
This guy is hovering above the men’s restroom at Isla Brewery.
We had planned to leave on Monday to travel to Cozumel, but stayed an extra day in hopes the seas would calm so that we could go swim with the whale sharks.
Just our luck, the ports were open on Monday and we had the most incredible whale shark experience. Read all about it!
It was another magical weekend on Isla Mujeres…..we were having so much fun enjoying our time with everyone that we didn’t take as many pictures as we should have.
Next year we think a group photo needs to be taken – do you think anyone will remember?
