The flight from Roatan to Utila was beautiful….we landed at the small airport around 10:15 in the morning and the first thing we saw was a guy just hanging out next to the runway….Is this the official greeter of Utila? Possibly…..
As soon as we landed Mia and Adam ran up to greet us with cold SalvaVidas to welcome us! Cheers! We were so excited to see them and start exploring Utila! We hopped on their golf cart to ride to their house to drop off our luggage before heading out to lunch. On the way to their house we had to take the “back road” (a rutted out dirt road through the woods) because the main road was closed in town because church was in session.
Their house was gorgeous and their beach was so cool – very different than here in Belize – lots of rocks with waves crashing over them. It’s amazing that a place that is so close to home can look and feel so different. Bags dropped off we were ready to start exploring….aka drinking….Utila.
First stop was lunch at Rehab. More SalvaVidas and chicken wings and cheese fries….Mia opted to have her cheese on the side….in a giant soup bowl….clearly proof that she is from Chicago.
Bowl of Cheese? Yes Please!
Next stop Skid Row. We were told we HAD to try the Giffity – What’s Giffity? The basic explanation was this: Rum with lots of stuff in it – it looked like it was full of twigs and random spices. There were more sticks and twigs in this bottle of “rum” than in a forest! (sorry but we were so excited to try the Giffity that we forgot to take a picture!) Mia and Adam kept talking about “Giffity Face”…”what’s Giffity Face?” – we kept asking….well that led to…just try a shot…..so we gave in and each had a very, very small shot of this Giffity or Gibnut Juice as Lisa kept calling it.
Lisa was first to taste hers……and BAM Giffity Face!
It’s not just one look, it’s more of a transition of faces as it eats away your esophagus and then stomach (or at last that’s what it felt like)
The first face is from the smell…after that you’re tongue gets the flavor and then tells your face to transition to phase two.
Next it enters your throat – face 3 and then it hits your belly – you guessed it – face number 4. (We were all worried about face 5 – aka the morning after bathroom giffity face).
Ronnie’s turn…..wait for it, wait for it…..Giffity Face!
We came. We saw. We won’t do it again!
In addition to the Giffity Juice Skid Row was also home to the world’s most ingenious way to hang a urinal. Most people put up pipes and bolt the urinal to the wall. Not Skid Row! These clever folks took a wire and actually hung the urinal like a piece of art……like a piece of art you pee in. Ability to flush? Obviously deemed over-rated as there was no water hooked up to this urinal. Ronnie played a game where he would kick the urinal so it would swing side to side….he called it “Peeing in a Pendulum”.
After the Gibnut Juice Bar and Grill, Mia and Adam brought us to another bar (guessing this is not a surprise to anyone)….and there was a surprise there waiting for us – Doron! Our camera guy from our House Hunters shoot….so fun! He just happened to be in Utila filming when we were there……how cool is it when stars align like that? After visiting with him it was time for one more bar stop and a few more SalvaVida’s before heading home to rest before dinner.
We started out to dinner on the golf cart but since we used it all day the batteries were wearing down…..looks like our mode of transportation to dinner will be the ATV! Yes, one ATV. The four of us and their two dogs (yes the dogs still had to come because we had already promised them a night out!) piled on to one ATV and we headed out to dinner…and Mia and Lisa were “dressed up” too!
That’s traveling Island Style!
We had an incredible dinner at Driftwood and afterwards went to a local party….it was a birthday party for a local businessman Denny Bush….talk about a party! Open bar, DJ, tons of dancing…..even the dogs were getting into the party dancing with us on the dance floor! We are all laughing and having a great time when all off a sudden a piñata dropped down from the ceiling and Mr. Bush started whacking at it……we found this hysterical because the piñata looked just like Lisa. Genuine Napoleon Dynamite moment right there in Utila.
Who could have ever imagined that 4 people and 2 dogs could have so much fun in less than 12 hours on one small island????
